1. Selecting and Preparing the Site
Oriental lilies are heavy feeders and require excellent drainage. If their bulbs sit in soggy soil during the winter, they will likely rot.
Soil Type: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil. If your soil is alkaline, adding peat moss or organic leaf mold can help.
Location: Choose a spot where the flowers will get plenty of sun, but the base of the plant can be shaded by shorter perennials or a thick layer of mulch.
Spacing: Plant bulbs about 8–12 inches apart to allow for air circulation, which prevents fungal issues like Botrytis.
2. Planting Instructions
Unlike many other bulbs, lily bulbs lack a protective "paper" skin (tunic), meaning they dry out quickly. Plant them as soon as possible after purchase.
Depth: Plant the bulbs deep—roughly 3 times the height of the bulb (usually 6–8 inches deep). Deep planting keeps the bulbs cool and provides better physical support for the heavy flower heads.

Settling: Fill the hole with soil and water deeply. There is no need to fertilize until you see green shoots poking through the soil in the spring.
